Towards low/zero-carbon urban mobility in Europe
Recommendations following the Transport White paper
A workshop of the UITP EU-Committee, Brussels, 7 February 2012
UITP fully supports the objective to decarbonise urban mobility set by the first target of the Transport White paper “Halving the use of conventionally-fuelled cars in urban transport by 2030; phasing them out in cities by 2050”. Nevertheless, replacing them by electric cars will not solve the mobility problems in cities.
Low/zero-carbon urban mobility in Europe has to rely on smart and integrated mobility concepts with high-quality public transport networks. Replacing conventionally fuelled cars by electric cars will just lead to ‘green congestion’.
Low or zero-carbon urban mobility in Europe will require major investments and public policies on mobility, funding included, should give priority to the development of smart, integrated urban mobility concepts. High quality, efficient and attractive public transport networks bring economic and environmental benefits and can be complemented by car and bike sharing schemes, as well as taxis.
This workshop will offer a platform to discuss the vision and the current concrete implementation steps as far as smart and integrated mobility concepts with high-quality public transport networks are concerned.
Want to take part in those discussions?
The UITP EU-Committee invites you to join their workshop in Residence Palace on Tuesday 7 February 2012!
